JULIAN MOON
Talented singer, songwriter Julian Moon was just 23 when she signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records, United States. Songs from her debut album, Good Girl, created with the label, reached up to one million on Spotify and has grown in popularity over other platforms like iTunes and YouTube.
The young star credits her life experiences as the source of inspiration for songs like Cup of Coffee and One Penny. The success of her album is also attributed to her collaboration with world-renowned songwriters Greg Wells, Jason Evigan, Cathy Dennis and Jeff Barry.
The Utah born singer developed her songwriting craft in the heart of Los Angeles and hence, the songs reflected in Good Girl, explore Julian and her friends’ lives, as they try and navigate chasing their dreams in a city that is cut-throat and expensive.
After releasing Good Girl, Julia became an independent artist and created an extended play record, entitled Pomegranate Seeds. This new E.P. is about the Greek myth of Persephone (daughter of Zeus), which she feels is a metaphorical representation of her life. The now 28-year-old is currently producing and directing a music video for her single, Siren Song, which she hopes to release in the new year (2019).
BACKGROUND
Thinking back to her childhood and her journey with music, Julia describes herself as having been “an awkward kid in high school and very shy”.
“One day I picked up my father’s guitar and started to teach myself songs from my favourite singer Jason Mraz. After learning a few of his songs, I started writing my own. Writing songs really helped me to express what I was thinking and feeling,” she said.
In fact, she didn’t realise she could sing and write for a long time until other people started to reach out and want to work with her.
“A lot of different people gave me a lot of opportunities to write, record, sing and perform and I developed my craft and talent along the way. My first gig was an open mic at a local coffee shop. It was fun and nerve-wracking. I felt like I had realised my dream when I got to headline a show at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles,” she said proudly.
She added excitedly, that a lot of her idols had performed there previously and the fact that she got a gig there too, was so “incredible”. She also felt so “lucky and grateful”.
CAREER
Moon got her first break through a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell, writing songs. The experience was phenomenal, as the young star learned from some of the best songwriters and producers in the world. In 2014, she received an incredible, once in a lifetime opportunity, signing to Warner Brothers for one album (Good Girl), which kick-started her career. Although she is now an independent artist, she has just created her latest E.P, Pomegranate Seeds, under an indie label called Allegory Records.
Two of Moon’s biggest musical inspirations have been Jason Mraz and Tristan Prettyman. These artists were largely influential in inspiring the talented singer to pick up a guitar and start writing her own songs. Mentored by Jeff Barry, she was able to hone-in-on her craft and take her songwriting to the next level. Another fan favourite of Moon’s is the fact that she writes her own songs and they are 100% based on her life. Good Girl is a look into her life post-college, trying to make it as an artist in LA, broke and starving. Pomegranate Seeds is a metaphorical exploration of becoming an independent artist.
FAMILY
Moon was very sick as a young child, going in and out of the hospital until she about 16-years-old. Once she started playing music, her health began to improve and according to her, “she started getting better”. “It was crazy and sometimes I wonder if it was more than a coincidence,” she said.
ACADEMICS
She attended Loyola Marymount University for her undergraduate degree in screenwriting and is currently studying psychology at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. She has never studied music officially but feels as though she has studied it unofficially all the time.
PERSONAL
Moon loves dancing, and cooking and singing (obviously) and also really love fashion! At the moment, she is inspired by Beyonce, Billie Eillish, Mansionz and Ariana Grande. “I love coffee, pasta and ice cream! I also really love salad”, she laughs.
Moon is also somewhat of a globetrotter, having travelled to Thailand, France, England, Norway, Canada and Mexico. In fact, she has been travelling internationally since she was about 16-years-old. Her dream performance would be to headline an international arena tour that’s filled with dancing, set changes and fun re-imaginings of her songs.

American artist, Julian Moon, introduces first single to South Africa
Talented American singer and songwriter, Julian Moon (29), will release her first single, Honour Among Thieves, to South African radio stations during the week of 25 September 2019. This single is taken off her second album, Pomegranate Seeds which is also available on all digital platforms now.
Moon was just 23-yrs-old when she signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records, United States. She quickly amassed record breaking downloads from her first album, Good Girl (2015), selling up to one million copies on Spotify and has grown in popularity over other platforms like iTunes and YouTube.
The young star credits her life experiences as the source of inspiration for hit songs like Cup of Coffee and One Penny from her first album, saying that Pomegranate Seeds (2016) was “different”, because it was an evolution of her style and where she is at in her life.
“It’s amazing how well Pomegranate Seeds was received, because it’s so different from Good Girl. I got inspired with it after some traveling and it just came to me. I think the first album was more the teenage version of me, because I was focused on being sweet, clever and witty. This second album feels more authentic. There is also the fact that this was an independent album and I felt like I could play more creatively with it, which is really nice,” said Moon.
She added that she and John Gilbertson, Brian Adam’s former sound engineer wrote many of the tracks together, including the single Honour Among Thieves, which they co-wrote in a day. Gilbertson also produced the album and inspired Moon to be different. The new EP (extended play) album is about the Greek myth of Persephone (daughter of Zeus), which Moon feels is a metaphorical representation of her life. The now 29-year-old is currently producing and directing a music video for her single, Siren Song as well.
“I am very lucky to have worked with John who is just so talented in what he does and very experienced. I am also very grateful to filmmaker and fashion designer, Angie Piccirillo from Neon Soap Box, Los Angeles for her art direction, visuals and photography lead on my album. I don’t think I would have been as creativity as she was with everything,” laughed Moon.
Moon attended Loyola Marymount University for her undergraduate degree in screenwriting and is currently studying psychology. She has never studied music officially, but feels as though she has studied it unofficially all the time.
Thinking back to her childhood and her journey with music, Moon describes herself as having been “an awkward kid in high school and very shy”.
“One day I picked up my father’s guitar and started to teach myself songs from my favourite singer Jason Mraz. After learning a few of his songs, I started writing my own. Writing songs really helped me to express what I was thinking and feeling,” she said.
